About Dubrovnik

Climate

Dubrovnik has a classic Mediterranean climate — mild winters, hot and dry summers, and around 2,600 hours of sunshine a year. Average temperatures run from about 9°C in January to 25°C in July and August, with the sea reaching around 21°C in summer. The maestral breeze keeps summer afternoons comfortable; bura and jugo are the winds to know about in the cooler months.

History

Dubrovnik’s Old Town dates back to the early Middle Ages and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the 13th century onwards, the city grew into a major Mediterranean maritime and trading power — the walls, palaces, churches and streets you can still walk today are its legacy.

Just south of the city, Cavtat sits on the site of the ancient settlement of Epidaurum, later an important Roman colony. The wider area has been continuously settled for centuries, layering Roman, medieval and Dubrovnik-era history together.

Worth the Trip

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is an easy day trip from Villa Betty — close enough to explore on your own schedule, then return to the quiet of Konavle instead of staying in the middle of the crowds. See our Local Guide for how to get there, plus Cavtat and everything else worth your time nearby.
